About Me

When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a writer. I even went to writing camp! And believe me, I’ve kept every poem and story from that era. My writing is my heart.

But somewhere along the line I got distracted by other interests and ended up in graduate school — for history! I moved from Saint Paul, Minnesota – where I grew up – to Cleveland, Ohio to attend Case Western Reserve University. (Received that PhD in history in 2005).

I enjoy history — but what I really love is talking about how we tell stories about the past. See – writer, for real.

I met my husband while in Cleveland and he got a job in Santa Rosa, California, so we packed up the cats and the moving van and headed for the coast. Our son was born in 2003 and after spending a lot of time exploring tide pools on the coast near Bodega Bay, we decided we missed our families.

As my husband is from Canada (originally Sweden), we thought my family might be the best to live near and moved back to the Minneapolis/Saint Paul metropolitan area.

After my daughter was born in 2006, I began to think more and more about writing. I took a few online classes from The Loft Literary Center and in 2014 decided to leave my job and jump with both feet into a new adventure. I started at the Hamline University Masters Program for Creative Writing for Children and Young Adults.

The first night of residency, after I got home, my children and husband made me signs cheering my new adventure and I knew I found my writing kindred spirits. The MFAC program introduced me to poetry— see my poetry page for more information on that unexpected joy — and helped me realize I write because I’m a writer and putting words to paper is something I need to do for me.

And my latest joy – teaching. I’m a Teaching Artist at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis and a mentor for the Society of Young Inklings. I teach all kinds of things – because most of all, I want to teach you to hear your own writer’s voice and encourage you to follow that voice. We are all writers – because we write. As a teacher or a mentor, I believe my job is to help you see your own unique voice and get the craft tools to wield that voice.

I’ve got a few different writing projects cooking – please check out my blog or projects page for more information. I’d love to hear from you – and please join me as I learn more and more about writing!

About Me

When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a writer. I even went to writing camp! I still have countless poems and stories and lit magazines I was a part of.

But somewhere along the line I got distracted by other interests and ended up in graduate school — for history! I received my PhD in History from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio in 2005.

I enjoy history — and I really enjoy talking about how we tell stories about the past, but being a professor was not for me. I met my husband while in Cleveland and he got a job in Santa Rosa, California, so we packed up the cats and the moving van and headed for the coast. To support myself in graduate school, I’d started working in fundraising — so just kept working in that arena. We had our son in 2003 and after spending a lot of time exploring tide pools on the coast near Bodega Bay, we decided we missed our families.

As my husband is from Canada (originally Sweden), we thought my family might be the best to live near and moved back to the Minneapolis/Saint Paul metropolitan area.
